Letter to My 16 Year Old Self

Dear 16 Year Old Terin,

You think you've got it all figured out - what you want to do for a living, the boy you'll marry, where you'll live, etc. Guess what? Those plans will change - for the better!

One of your ex's

You're going to have your heart broken too many times to count, but you're going to do your share of breaking hearts as well. The boys who broke your heart don't deserve you, and the boys who's hearts you broke probably don't deserve that either.

I wish you'd have had better taste in guys - WHY do you always go for the bad boy!? They're nothing but trouble - one ex is now in jail, one should probably either be in jail or dead by now, and a few others are still around town - you'll see them now that you're grown and everyone will get along - one plays golf with your husband now and one has mutual friends so you'll all hang out sometimes - AWKWARD! (Oh wait, you haven't watched Jersey Shore yet, so you didn't catch the Pauly D reference!)

You'll be exposed to a lot in your teenage years - drug abuse, alcohol abuse, friends getting pregnant and having babies at a very young age - but thankfully, you make it out okay - without any addictions or babies - yet!

You hate your job as a hostess at Texas Steakhouse, but you'll actually end up missing it! Enjoy the late nights sweeping rugs and never forget your coworkers - you're still friends with a few of them now!

Oh, and you are NOT fat!! Right now, you're probably the biggest of your friends, but really, it's only because you have big hips - "child bearing hips" as you've been told all your life. And yeah, you'll definitely put those "child bearing hips" to good use later on in life! ;) Trust me, you'll look back on your teenage years and wish you could look like that again!

LIVE for those football games on Friday nights - you're going to miss them! Seriously, it's probably the part of High School you'll miss the most! Your love for football will stick around though and you'll be a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. You'll stick with them through the ups & downs - as you do with anything you love. You're very determined and have a huge heart. This will show throughout your life.

Spend more time with Nana and Papa - they'll be taken away from you a lot sooner than you'd like! :(

GO TO CLASS! Trust me, you're going to regret skipping Trig your Junior year, because you'll have to repeat it Senior year and that'll just suck. lol. (Oh, do you even know what "LOL" is? It's laugh-out-loud. Yeah, sounds kinda stupid, huh?) But regardless of skipping classes to get high in the green house or go shopping with boyfriends, getting suspended, and basically living in ISS (In school suspension), you'll make it out alive!

After high school, you're going to want to "take a year off" from school, then plan on going to college the next year. Yeah, that doesn't happen. Because three months after graduating high school, you start seeing a boy. He's yet another "bad boy," but this one's different. He's a few years older and more mature. He figures out that if he wants to keep you around, he'll drop his bad habits - and he does. You'll have a baby with him and get married at 19. Then you'll have two more babies... and your life will be complete and you'll live pretty much happily ever after.

So hang in there, girl... the best days of your life are yet to come.

Here's a sneak peek ;)

Love,
26 Year Old Terin

  1. It is nice to think back on the good old days--and as for me I can't even say I would change a minute of it--but would I do those things again--probably not! No regrets--just enjoy the memories as I do!

  10. Oh the things I'd tell myself and the things I'd tell myself to DO back at that age!! How fun. it really made me think, if I could send a message back what would I say? Definitely something to think about and see how far you have come and what you have learned.

  13. Oh, so true! I wish we all could send one "love letter" to our younger selves. Just something to reassure that young person that it all works out, even if times seem hard. I could echo the fat comments. I remember being so concerned about being "big"... even though I was tiny. Through the eyes of a 34 year old the difference between friends being 105 lbs and me being 115 lbs isn't important.

    Great post!

  15. Such a fun post. It's always fun to go back remember and then sit and wonder if you could do it again would you change anything. I've done this a few times, I'd only make minor changes. Laugh more... etc.

    Thanks for sharing this!
